Coopers to protect second phase of retail centre

Coopers were brought back in to replace and upgrade the original smoke containment system at the Pavilions Shopping Centre in Birmingham

Following on from the first phase refurbishment of the Pavilions Shopping Centre in Birmingham, Phase 2, which opened in autumn 2005, has now extended the centre even further.

Coopers, having already successfully installed a smoke containment system in Phase 1, were brought back in by the architects, and M and E Consultants, to replace and upgrade the original system installed by another supplier during the initial construction of the complex.

This phase of development saw the removal and replacement of the glass lift and the amalgamation of several of the retail units into larger ones.

New regulations meant that the upgraded automatic smoke barrier system had to comply fully with the strict requirements of EN1201-1, the new pan-european standard for smoke barriers covering barrier integration within total smoke control systems.

The Pavilions Centre is a retail complex covering four floors with over forty units, comprising well-known high street retail outlets such as M and S, Laura Ashley, Next and Monsoon.

Also included is 'The Pier', a leisure area complete with its great glass elevator and many cafes where shoppers can relax and enjoy good food in pleasant surroundings.

Coopers' expertise in providing fire and smoke containment systems within the large retail environment has ensured that visitors to the Pavilions Centre are fully protected in the event of an emergency.
