CIWEM look at the Brown budget
CIWEM review this year's Budget an explain why they think it is actually less green than in the past.
Although CIWEM recognises that some of the actions taken by Gordon Brown encourage good environmental behaviour, CIWEM believes that this year's budget is actually less green than in the past CIWEM welcomes the Chancellor's commitment to year on year increases in fuel duty, Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) and landfill tax

CIWEM also feels that this was a missed opportunity to change consumer behaviour, such as amending the rate of VAT currently charged on digital publications, supporting more micro-generation energy technologies, helping with home insulation measures and introducing an immediate and much higher rate of VED on the most polluting of cars.
CIWEM believes the Government should have invested more in green technologies and renewable energy, halted their road building programme - with the money saved going to improve public transport - and invested in public climate change awareness campaigns.
CIWEM Executive Director, Nick Reeves, said: "Given the urgency of tackling climate change, Gordon Brown's budget was very disappointing".
"Until more measures are taken, climate change legislation will be under-mined and ministers will find it hard to meet legally binding targets on carbon dioxide emissions".
"CIWEM wants to see further evidence that all Government spending is committed to taking action against climate change.".
