Groundworks for the Building Schools for the Future scheme have been secured by CJ Haughey, working alongside Balfour Beatty, including new Midlands school - Big Wood.

The leading groundworks and civil engineering contractor has secured packages for two new projects.

Both are part of Nottingham City Council's GBP180 million Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme.

The landmark development is being headed by the Inspired Spaces Consortium.

Led by contractor Carillion Plc and including Capita Architecture and Evans Vettori Architects, it won the Nottingham City Council BSF programme.

CJ Haughey's work includes groundworks for the GBP20 million secondary school in the north of the city to be called Big Wood.

The company has also won groundworks at Hadden Park High Secondary School where there is going to be a GBP7 million remodelling and refurbishment plus the building of a new GBP15million special school.

This is two of eight projects in the scheme's first phase.

Worth a combined GBP2.2million, the groundworks contracts will see CJ Haughey undertake all groundworks; foundations, sports pitch construction, drainage, surfacing, car park construction and the installation of ground floor and first floor concrete floor slabs.

At Big Wood, the company will also be undertaking the creation of a 120 metre long retaining wall.

The contracts wins follow the CJ Haughey's successful completion of groundworks at seven schools in Birmingham, working with Balfour Beatty as part of the Birmingham BSF scheme.

"We are delighted to have secured these schemes," commented CJ Haughey's Managing Director Chris Haughey.

"They reflect the continued growth of the company and are testimony to all of the hard work and commitment by all of the team".

BSF is the biggest ever school buildings investment programme.

The aim is to rebuild or renew nearly every secondary school in England, with the Government investing some GBP2.2bn.
