Total Hygiene improves school toileting facilities

A Clos-o-Mat product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Sep 2, 2010

Total Hygiene has developed a package aimed at helping schools further improve toileting facilities following that latest research by the Bog Standard campaign.

The research has revealed that more than 60 per cent of school pupils had complained to their school about toilets, 30 per cent of secondary schools had insufficient or no toilet paper, and almost half had no disabled toilets despite one in five pupils in mainstream education being special needs.

Less than half the schools surveyed had plans to renovate the facilities: refurbishment that can be- and is- undertaken under devolved funding.

Total Hygiene can survey, design, install and service inclusive toileting that meets the needs of both the school's special pupils, and the larger local community, in compliance with relevant Codes of Practice and Regulations in accessible building design, from a basic Document M compliant washroom to an all-encompassing Changing places facility, including a Clos-o-Mat wash and dry toilet.

Robin Tuffley, marketing manager, Total Hygiene commented: "We have devised a package ranging from medium-term rental of a Clos-o-Mat to meet the needs of a specific pupil while at the school, through provision of a basic disability compliant WC, to a comprehensive 'Changing places' facility for pupils- and school visitors- who need at least one carer when going to the toilet.

To our knowledge, we are the only company in the UK with such a level of expertise and support, enabling school managers to make effective decisions on how to improve their school toilets- and thus contribute to an improved environment for their pupils".

Schools across the country are already seeing the benefits of Total Hygiene's services, including Harlaw Academy in Aberdeen, Bournside School in Cheltenham and King James College in Bishop Auckland.

The latter's SENCO (Special education needs co-ordinator) EXPLAINED: "Because of the physical difficulties some of our students have, we needed to undertake some adaptations to conventional toilet facilities, hence the creation of the new room, with a height adjustable Clos-o-Mat, height adjustable basin and height adjustable changing table.

We worked closely with a whole range of professionals the get the best advice, and provide the most flexible facilities that would meet the needs, and increase independence, of not only our current students, but those of the future".
