Rapid delivery of CMS high performing geogrid ground reinforcement system has helped Kiernan Construction keep to site programmes at the new waste recycling development at Leyland in Lancashire.

In charge of ground preparation work at the 50-acre 'brownfield' site, which was formerly used for testing Leyland trucks, Kiernan Construction is responsible for levelling the area before piling can take place This involves excavating the in-situ concrete and reinforcing the ground with BBA and CE certified CMS geogrids where necessary

A multi-phase development, the first stage alone has required over 30,000m2 of CMS materials to be laid.

Working with CMS, Kiernan has identified the most cost effective combinations to deliver the required performance in different areas.

Available with a range of tensile strengths, from 30kN/m up to 400kN/m, CMS geogrids are manufactured from either polyester (PET) or polypropylene (PP).

At Lancaster Waste Park, the polyester material with 40kN/m strength was used to reinforce embankments, and the polypropylene at both 20kN/m and 40kN/m were installed for ground reinforcement.

Importantly, for projects such as this, all CMS geogrids are kept as stock items and are ready to be shipped on demand, including same day delivery.

John Edmondson, buyer, Kiernan Construction, comments: "With a large scale development such as this, the best strategy to keep the site programme to a minimum is to respond efficiently to ground reinforcements as they arise - enabling us to identify the best solution for a specific area".

"CMS has been extremely responsive in their approach, getting the geogrids out to site exactly when we need, even if that means within a few hours".

CMS geogrids are made of extruded monolithic flat bars with welded rigid junctions.

Strength is achieved through the interlocking effect of the granular soil into the grid apertures, and the frictional force transfer between the soil and the structured flat bars.

Richard Longbottom, technical sales director, CMS Geotechnical Solutions, concludes: "By keeping a wide range of the geogrid materials in stock, in terms of size, strength and composition, we're able to respond efficiently to changing site demands and at the same time ensure the product remains cost effective for the contractor.".
