An architectural design competition has prompted architecture students from the University of Nottingham to produce a series of imaginative and striking entries.

An architectural design competition organised by a Nottingham company has prompted architecture students from the University of Nottingham to produce a series of imaginative and striking entries, and earned the winning submissions a cheque for £500 each The two successful designs were for an exhibition stand, and for a sculpture to be mounted above the premises of competition organisers Canal Engineering - one of the UK's leading independent engineering companies

One of the areas in which Lenton-based Canal specialises is the creation of bespoke profiled metal works such as walkways and staircases.

"Because these sort of features can be both decorative and practical they can have an enormous impact on the design of a building or interior," says Canal's Managing Director Martin Price.

"To emphasise this we included an evocative brief for the sculpture and a more practical one for the exhibition stand.

We hope the competition will help introduce tomorrow's architects to the tremendous potential that's waiting for them to explore in their designs." Canal has a long record of success in supplying specially commissioned metal work to a variety of high-profile projects, including the Urbis Museum and Imperial War Museum North in Manchester, and the Magna Centre in Sheffield.

140 students from the University's Institute of Architecture worked in teams of four to create drawings, models and computer simulations of their exhibition stand and sculptural designs.

"The students are studying a Bachelor of Architecture, and are part way through their 7- year training to become an architect," says Antony Wood, Lecturer in Architecture at the University.

"Much of their normal work is hypothetical so the competition was a valuable opportunity for them to work on a real project with the chance of seeing their design actually brought to life." Canal will now work with the winning teams to manufacture an exhibition stand which the company will use at trade shows, and an eye-catching fabricated sculpture which will be installed on the roof of the company's Nottingham premises.

"The emphasis was on reflecting the variety of skills we offer and the wide variety of materials and techniques we use in our products," adds Martin Price.

"Entries ranged from the practical to the abstract, but all showed a high degree of creativity and alternative thinking, and we're delighted with the enthusiasm and commitment shown by the students," The winning exhibition stand entry was created by Christian Dimbleby, Darran Oxley, Spencer Fretwell and Matthew Phillips, while the team which designed the winning sculpture was Suzanne Dempsey, Paul Foster, Nicholas Green and Matthew Hayhurst.
