In line with the Government's move to extend self-certification beyond gas and electrical work, CORGI has developed two new Competent Persons Schemes for the Plumbing and Ventilation trades.

In line with the Government's move to extend self-certification beyond gas and electrical work, CORGI has developed two new Competent Persons Schemes for the Plumbing and Ventilation trades in England and Wales From April 2006 plumbers and ventilation specialists will be able to certify their work through CORGI too, saving them the time and expense of personally having to submit a building notice and make contact with Local Building Control

Tim Ottridge, MD of CORGI's Registration Schemes commented: " Corgi has been the country's gas safety watchdog for over 30 years and is a trusted consumer brand".

"Set against this background, it seemed a natural step for CORGI to develop plumbing and ventilation Competent Persons Schemes to complement our electrical offering launched last year".

"The schemes were initially designed with our registered gas installers in mind, but they are just as relevant for others working outside of the gas industry".

CORGI is not the only approved scheme provider, however, their schemes offer competent trades people and companies the opportunity to carry a CORGI badge and benefit from its trusted reputation amongst consumers.

Recent research commissioned by CORGI, found that consumers associate the CORGI badge with safety, quality and professionalism and 76% of those questioned said that they would look for a CORGI registered engineer ahead of a non-registered one to do work that wasn't gas related".

"With so much confidence in the CORGI brand - even beyond our core gas area - we think plumbers, electricians and ventilation fitters, will find the CORGI schemes and badges of real value when promoting their businesses and quoting for jobs." said Ottridge.

""In simple terms, the CORGI brand gives businesses an important competitive edge over their competitors".

Each scheme will be identified by its own badge.

Presented in purple, orange and red and using easy-to-recognise shapes, they have been designed to complement and yet be quite distinctive from the existing CORGI orange gas shield.

Another advantage of joining CORGI's Competent Persons Schemes is their one-stop-shop, hassle free approach, which will benefit a person or company whether they are applying for one or more schemes".

"We have tried to make complying with Government legislation as simple as possible for all applicants by providing a unique one-stop-shop." continued Ottridge".

"This will save potential members time and money as they need only fill in one application, receive one inspection and complete one notification process for all types of work".

In an effort to make complying with Building Regulations and self-certification as quick and simple as possible, CORGI will also issue the consumer with their certificate, unlike some scheme providers who leave this up to the trades person to deal with.

Extensive technical support is a further benefit of CORGI's Competent Persons Schemes.

Those who join, will immediately have access to CORGI's technical helpline, where its team of specialists will be on hand to offer practical technical advice as well as answer queries about standards and regulations.

The teaming of the CORGI brand with Competent Persons Schemes also bodes well for the trade, as next year the Government will launch a new consumer initiative called the Home Information Pack.

From June 2007, anyone moving home must provide prospective buyers with this pack that contains certificates showing that work done in the home complies with Building Regulations.

Ottridge again: "This makes joining CORGI's Competent Persons Scheme all the more significant, as membership will provide the easiest route to giving the consumer the certificates they'll want and need".

About Competent Persons Schemes.

Any fitter who is qualified to work with either electrics, plumbing and ventilation knows that work carried out in a domestic situation must comply with the relevant Building Regulations and be notified to Local Building Control.

However, as an alternative to submitting a building notice, the Government has set up Competent Persons Schemes, to allow installers to self-certify that their work complies with Building Regulations.
