Warning about working outside employers
business
CORGI is warning operatives employed by a CORGI registered business that working outside their employer's business means they are working illegally.
CORGI is warning operatives employed by a CORGI registered business that are working for themselves for monetary gain outside of their employer's business are working illegally and if caught they will be prosecuted This warning comes after a number of complaints have been received by CORGI from members of the public who have employed a registered business' operative who has claimed to be CORGI registered but is working for themselves not their employer

High Court confirms gas work notification is legal
Following the Appeal by the APHC against the introduction of Gas Work Notification, Mr Justice Calvert-Smith ruled that Gas Work Notification is entirely legal.
These operatives are only CORGI registered under their employer and although competent and qualified to work on gas, as soon as they work outside their employer's business they are an illegal gas worker in the eyes of the law.
A recent episode of BBC1's Rogue Traders programme (broadcast on BBC1 Monday 3 October 8pm) also highlighted this issue by featuring a CORGI registered installer that allowed other operatives to use his credentials.
This case is still currently being investigated by CORGI.
CORGI's Chief Executive Mike Thompson says: "If any CORGI registered installer is found to be breaking the rules or regulations appropriate action will be taken, which could lead to removal from the CORGI register and being reported for prosecution to the Health and Safety Executive".
"We have inspectors across the UK, and we encourage members of the public to help us in our battle against dangerous gas work by reporting any installer they suspect to be working unsafely or illegally".
"CORGI registration is like a driving licence".
"It is proof that the installer is qualified and legal, but even this is open to abuse by unscrupulous cowboys".
It is a legal requirement that any business in the UK that works on gas appliances must employ competent personnel and be CORGI registered.
They also have to register every individual engineer that they employ.
The Health and Safety Executive has responsibility for prosecuting anyone caught breaking the law.
