Composite car park contract for PFI hospital

Pre cast concrete car park specialist, Composite, has just commenced a major contract to provide a new 694-space car park at Broomfield District General Hospital in Chelmsford.

Pre cast concrete car park specialist, Composite, has just commenced a major contract to provide a new 694-space car park at Broomfield District General Hospital in Chelmsford.

The new multi-storey car park replaces surface car parking for around 200 cars.

There were important safety and security considerations, due to the large numbers of staff using the parking at different times of the day and night.

Composite's clear span pre cast concrete frame method of construction meant that the car park could be built without internal columns, improving safety and flexibility.

Composite, which announced its change of name from M T Hojgaard (UK) earlier this month, is able to provide a rapid 16-week construction timetable.

The speed of construction reflects that the frames are manufactured off site and then craned into place.

This enabled the client, Kier Eastern, to meet tight time constraints on providing secure staff parking which were required by the PFI contract.

Composite has also just completed work on a second health sector project, for Stratford Healthcare in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The company has provided clear span pre cast concrete frames for two buildings, which will be used for residential and office accommodation for medical staff.

Managing director of Composite, Roy Nield-Dumper said: "A major factor in both these very different contracts was the flexibility, long floor spans and quality offered by a pre cast concrete rather than steel frame, along with the speed and ease of construction.".
