Corus have launched The Part L - SBEM (Simplified Building Energy Model) Advice Service as part of their ongoing commitment to added value services for the construction industry.

The service will be available to specifiers only through the Colorcoat Connection helpline.

The SBEM calculation is used to demonstrate compliance of a building to the new Part L2 (buildings other than dwellings) of the Building Regulations.

It calculates the annual energy use for a proposed building and then compares it with the energy use of a comparable 'notional' building.

The advice line will provide specifiers with detailed advice about how the SBEM programme can be used to calculate the CO2 emission levels for pre-finished steel clad industrial or commercial buildings.

The service will focus on the roof and wall fabric and offer advice about input data, fabric U values, heat loss through details including appropriate psi values and air-tightness.

In addition to this, advice about day lighting levels, lighting control and the possibility for solar overheating through large areas of roof-lights can also be accessed.

The service also explains how the quality levels in construction must be demonstrated by a final calculation and that this calculation uses actual figures taken from air leakage tests of the building and commissioned building services.

It also highlights the need to use quality materials from suppliers who can provide the backing of comprehensive technical guidance and a calculation service for construction details.

Another feature of the service is that enquiries can be answered about workmanship and the importance of working with contractors who have a record of producing airtight envelopes and who can back this up with a system of checks and quality records.

The advice service will provide guidance to ensure that buildings comply with revised Building Regulations and eliminated the need for costly and time-consuming remedial work prior to handover.

Specifiers will benefit from having access to a free guidance service from recognised industry experts.

Access to the advice service will be through direct contact to the helpline or as a referral to it via the Corus Construction Centre Hotline or through our supply chain partners.

Clients will be provided with detailed and specific advice for their particular query.

Information will be provided through a call back system.

This will allow qualified engineers to assess and answer the enquiry with optimum accuracy.

The service is due for launch in October more details can be found at www.colorcoat-online.com or by contacting the Colorcoat Connection helpline on +44 (0) 1244 892434.
