Capita Bobrowski, the civil and structural engineering practice, has made major progress in its redevelopment of the Grandstand at Epsom Downs Racecourse.

The frame of the new Grandstand is now in place, along with most of the steppings and the first lift shaft.

When completed, the new Grandstand will have a capacity of 11,000 in a contemporary design and will be used for events throughout the year.

Inside will feature the large Oaks Hall with 10,330 sq ft (960 sq m) suitable for conferences, exhibitions, banquets and other corporate events.

The first floor will have flexible uses for banqueting and racing.

The second floor will have 14 private suites and the Downs View Suite for just over 100 people - to be used as a venue for wedding receptions, race days or exclusive parties.

The balconies have been designed to overlook the racecourse and offer panoramic views across London.

Now the frame is in place it is easy to visualise the new Grandstand's shape; the steppings currently under construction will be able to accommodate 4,300 spectators.

Visitors at Saturday's Derby Festival had access to the area, with the overall project due for completion in March 2009.

The new Grandstand is part of a major GBP27.6 million redevelopment programme at Epsom Downs Racecourse.

Capita Bobrowski is also working on a new 120 bedroom hotel which is nearing completion.

The new Express by Holiday Inn Epsom will be a modern and contemporary hotel set to open for business at the beginning of August in 2008.

The hotel, built on the site of the old paddock, will provide suitable accommodation for both business and leisure guests.

Capita Bobrowski is working with architects Limbrick to carry out the projects.

The structural consultants were able to call upon their experience of sports stadia construction, having previously worked on Newmarket, Goodwood and Cheltenham racecourses.
