Capita Symonds completes natural play scheme

Capita Symonds has completed the first stages of a new scheme The Play Pathfinder, across various playgrounds in the Darwen area.

The innovative new playground scheme which is being developed by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council with funding from the Department of Children's, Schools and Families (DCSF).

The GBP2.5m project - which will act as a template for similar schemes across the UK - aims to provide all children and young people with free access to play opportunities which are inclusive, natural and innovative.

Capita Symonds' work has involved the design, development and construction of 13 new playgrounds across the borough.

The playgrounds are based upon natural play, and encourage challenging play opportunities whilst promoting the sites natural surroundings.

The playgrounds also aim to include natural materials such as sand, water, rocks and landscaping and are based on the following ten principles...

Are unique to the area.

In areas which will promote extensive use.

Make use of natural elements.

Provide a wide range of play opportunities.

Are accessible to all children.

Meet community needs.

Allow children of different ages to play together.

Build in opportunities to experience risk and challenge.

Are sustainable and appropriately maintained.

Allow for change and evolution.

Consultation has already begun on phase two, which will see the development a further 16 sites - plus a large Adventure Playground - which are due for completion in March 2010.

Paul Silcock, Senior Landscape Architect, who will lead on Phase Two said: "Play is fundamental to the successful development of every child - encouraging creativity, teaching children to learn about risk, helping with their physical development and raising self-confidence.

Following the success of phase one, we are looking forward to working with the Council to create further innovative play spaces for young people in the borough".

Councillor Michael Law-Riding, executive member for leisure and culture and play champion for the borough said: "These are exciting times for our young people.

The Play Pathfinder programme will bring opportunities to enhance the lives of children across the borough.

We want children and parents to come on board and tell us what they would like to see so that we get it right for children of all ages and abilities.
