First Manager To Charter New
Professional Hallmark
Malcolm Wright, a business development manager at NG Bailey, a mechanical and electrical building services company, has become the first person in his sector to be awarded "Chartered Manager" status.
The accolade, conferred by the Chartered Management Institute, recognises his ability to manage a direct team of eight staff and also deliver construction project management expertise The award highlights the importance of developing leadership and management skills within the construction engineering profession

New research by the Chartered Management Institute shows senior executives in the construction sector are struggling to manage conflicting priorities.
It provides independent endorsement of Malcolm's effectiveness and complements his engineering qualifications, and MBA which was recently gained from the University of Teesside.
To achieve Chartered Manager status, Malcolm needed to show business impact by demonstrating how he has made a measured difference to the NG Bailey's performance.
Malcolm submitted a portfolio of work for online assessment, obtained 360-degree appraisals from colleagues and completed the process with a panel interview conducted by the Institute's assessors.

Lack of management skills cause workplace bullying
New research released by the Ban Bullying At Work campaign reveals that two thirds (66%) of managers believe that lack of management skills is the major factor contributing to bullying.
His success was measured against six nationally recognised skill-sets, including the ability to manage customer needs, information and resources.

He clearly has a high level of management capability and has demonstrated these abilities as a complementary skill to his technical excellence.

Malcolm will have to undertake a 3-yearly review, involving submission of fresh evidence of ongoing business impact, to retain his new Chartered status.
He says: "Reassessment makes the designation different from traditional chartered awards.
It means I cannot rest on my laurels because my skills must remain current, especially if I am to continue to deliver a valuable service to clients and colleagues, alike.
And being one of the first in the whole country has given me an additional sense of achievement - I've really enjoyed the experience." The Chartered Manager hallmark was launched in September 2003, following the completion of a pilot scheme which involved managers from a broad range of business sectors.
The programme was created in the wake of research which revealed that 36 per cent of organisations in the UK say that their managers are not proficient.* McCartney says: "Chartered Manager provides professional recognition for leadership and management competence.
Those managers who achieve Chartered status send out the clear message that continuous professional development is an integral part of being a successful manager.
Malcolm is to be congratulated on his pioneering achievement.".
