In response to this, the WEEE directive places the onus on producers of electrical and electronic appliances to take responsibility for the recycling, collection and treatment of electrical waste, through financing the disposal of WEEE from private households.
The WEEE directive is complimented by another directive, The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive.
The RoHS directive will legislate the maximum levels of the use of hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chrome, PBB and PBDE from the production of electrical and electronic appliances from July 2006.
Corus Colors has conducted extensive development work over the last two years in partnership with both suppliers and customers to redesign their processes to remove the need for chromated pre-treatments.
Peter Evans, senior manager environment for Sony, comments: "Sony set a very aggressive target to phase out hexavalent chrome in its products.
