Architects specified Colorcoat HPS200 pre-finished steel from Corus for the Pflaum cladding system.
When the building was originally erected in 1973, it was clad in pre-finished steel by Corus.
When the maintenance cycle was due, the decision was made to use Corus products again to keep the building's walls and appearance intact with minimum disruption to the daily operation of the plant.
The original pre-finished on three of the four elevations was fully intact with no signs of corrosion.
"We only needed to pay attention to the one elevation," explains Wes Wardell, Packaging Engineer at Runcorn Packaging, which packages Guinness and a wide range of other products into cans and bottles, including Smirnoff Ice, Archers Aqua, Harp Lager, Kilkenny Irish Ale and Kaliber.
"This is where the tanker bay is located and the wall receives more wear and tear than the other three sides.
Additionally, it is also more exposed to the elements and had suffered more weathering.
We chose Corus to match the existing coating and to provide the protection that was necessary for the metal panels, and it was applied over a three week period by contractors, Hankinsons." "The result is exactly what we wanted," concludes Mr Wardell.
"The building looks rejuvenated with all four elevations now matching thanks to the like for like application of the Corus coating." The application shows the durability of the Corus product as even after 30 years, the original pre-finished steel has remained fully intact and only required cosmetic retouching.
"If the correct maintenance is carried out, protection to the substrate will be successful for the guaranteed life span," says Ian Burns of the Corus Colorcoat Connection helpline. Request a free brochure from Corus Colors ...
"The overpainting of the Diageo Global Supply, Runcorn Packaging Plant shows that the coating is effective for over 30 years and with the application of a new coat to the external elevation, the walls will last for at least as long again.".
