Wings of change at Lyons seafood factory

Colorcoat HPS200 from Corus ideal solution for use on new wave form roof because it allowed Lyons to match its corporate colours and is extremely hardwearing.

When Lyons Seafoods needed to expand its chilled food production base in Warminster it turned to an architect with experience of designing large processing plants and cladding contractors with an eye for innovative and yet simple ways of working Extending its existing chilled processing plant, with the addition of 1200m2 of offices over two floors and 1500m2 of new factory space took the overall Lyons site size to around 4.5 hectares and allowed it to consolidate its processing plant and headquarters offices at the same location

Architect Damen Associates worked closely with the client to produce a design that would be easy to build and yet create a distinct new building that would sit well within its surroundings.

Colorcoat HPS200 from Corus was seen as the ideal solution for use on the new building's 1200 m2 wave form roof because it not only allowed Lyons to match its corporate colours but because it is also extremely hardwearing.

This enabled the cladding installation contractors to walk on it when installing the steel roofing top sheets, thus speeding up the project considerably, providing extensive cost savings.

In order to lessen the impact of the building on its immediate surroundings, the architect designed the roof-line as a rolling curve, rather than the conventional, and often stark flat skyline silhouette.

This inspired idea dovetailed neatly with the Lyons wave-like corporate logo design and pleased the local planning authorities, who had been dubious as to how an industrial building would fit into the mainly residential area.

Using a Euroclad system, cladding contractor Curtis Engineering installed composite wall panels to the sides of the building, while the entire front facade - where the office is located - was fully glazed.

The wave shaped roof is formed by large curved steel beams that bolt together at their centres.

It spans 30m and reaches 12m at its highest point.

On top of this framework, Curtis Engineering laid a 1200 m2 twin skin Euroclad Euroseam roof finished with Colorcoat HPS200 in Goose Wing Grey.

Landry says: "We used the Corus product because of its superior colour range, which enabled us to match to our corporate colours and because we are guaranteed that it won't deteriorate over time." The cladding contractor's work was extensively site-based: forming the large curved steel sheets with specialist Euroclad equipment at the project location, rather than in a factory.

"It took two days to load out the roof with top sheets and about eight days to lay it," says Duncan Allen, sales manager for Curtis Engineering.

This was made possible by the use of the Colorcoat HPS200 pre- finished steel sheets that the contractor was able to walk on, rather than aluminium sheeting, or products with less hard-wearing finishes that would have required extensive scaffolding and erroneous working methods.

The £5 million headquarters and processing plant extension was completed in February 2006 both on time and within budget.

Landry says: "We all worked closely together throughout the project, from the beginning".

"This enabled us to produce the best building possible using the expertise of the architect and contractors as well as our own". Request a free brochure from Corus Colors ...

"We are very pleased with the outcome and moving into the new offices makes it all the more worthwhile.".
