Corus Colorcoat used on new leisure
development

New leisure park on the North West coast of England is dominated by the two main buildings clad using metallic effect Colorcoat HPS200.

A new leisure park on the North West coast of England ups the ante for out of town development, with a strong aesthetic and unified approach across the entire built site, which incorpates a major restaurant chain The development includes two main buildings - an eight screen cinema, housed in one 1860 m2 building and a 1400 m2 health club adjacent

Also on the site are a Pizza Hut restaurant and a new gastro pub, as well as associated landscaping and car parking.

Newly completed, the 1.6 hectare site is dominated by the two main buildings.

These are clad using metallic effect Colorcoat HPS200.

A major feature which unifies the element is the large 70 m canopy, which runs in a wave pattern along the length of the facade of the two buildings and over the main entrance.

Cantilevered out nearly 3m from the main structure, and supported by only four feature columns near the centre, the canopy's underside is clad in Colorcoat HPS200 in Orion to produce a corrugated 'ripple' effect that follows the wave of the canopy roof.

The main buildings feature stack bonded terracotta block work walls at ground level up to 4 m high.

This block plinth to the buildings, built around the structural steelwork, is a base onto which the composite wall cladding is installed.

Corus Colorcoat HPS200 used in composite panels clad the rest of the 10 m high building, swathing a further 6m in height in 1300mm wide vertical strips to emphasize the structural grid and break the horizontal emphasis of the elevation.

Project architect Ian Hunter says: "The brief for the project was to build high-quality, but cost effective shell units to be developed internally to Tenant requirements".

"We intended to use a small contemporary palette of materials, expressing the modular and structural elements of the development".

This brief included the external design of the Pizza Hut restaurant on the site.

In keeping with the main buildings, it too has been clad using Corus Colorcoat HPS200 in Sirius.

"We took Pizza Hut's standard restaurant unit," says Hunter, "and designed the facade in keeping with the rest of the built elements".

"It unifies the site and creates a sense of place".

Local planning officers had reservations about the use of standard grey cladding and wanted something of better quality.

The architect specified flat panels to reflect the high quality nature of the scheme and be more aesthetically pleasing".

"Because the development sits on the Promenade in Cleveleys immediately facing the sea, the harsh environment called for products that would withstand the demanding conditions," says Hunter".

"Colorcoat HPS200 was an obvious choice with its suitability to coastal environments; the new range allowed for a cost effective lustrous silver finish in the flat format we wanted, producing a real high quality feel to the scheme".

The product in Sirius was specified for the main cladding panels, covering over 2300 m2 of wall area on the main buildings and Pizza Hut, while the darker Orion was installed for the soffit panels and the vertical cladding over the entrance areas to all buildings.

The completed scheme sits within a wider regeneration of the area including a sea defense wall, Jubilee Gardens and upgraded promenade. Request a free brochure from Corus Colors ...
