Specialist accommodation manufacturer C3S provides solutions by adapting homes using a C3S bespoke re-locatable units.

The need for bespoke accommodation has been literally brought home to a family in Leeds The family has a child with a long term limiting illness which requires the parents to physically lift and manoeuvre him everywhere

Their housing provider, Leeds East Homes, has worked in partnership with specialist accommodation manufacturer C3S to provide a solution, by adapting their home using a C3S bespoke re-locatable unit.

The family maintains the strategy has 'made a massive difference' to their lives.

The 6.2m x 3.8m modular building was purpose-designed for the family by C3S in consultation with the family, their occupational therapist and Leeds East Homes.

Factory-built, it eliminated the weeks of dirt and disruption to the family if it had been traditionally-built in bricks and mortar on site, and was simply craned into position against the existing home, giving the family the benefit of standard living accommodation with a purpose-designed, ground level bedroom and bathroom 'extension' to encompass their specific needs.

A key element within the unit is an X/Y hoist, which, with specially designed doors between the two rooms, enables the parents to position and advance the hoist exactly where required, minimizing the effort exerted lifting and moving their child.

The unit incorporates recessed lighting- a standard feature of C3S units- so the manoeuvrability of the hoist is not impaired.

Other bespoke features include an adjustable-height bath, which further helps the family aid their son in basic living and hygiene.

John Ogilvie, area housing manager for Leeds East Homes, explained, "It is impossible within budgetary constraints to have a stock of homes that meets every family's special needs".

"We needed to address this family's requirements quickly".

"This solution was achieved more rapidly than if we had built a traditional extension, and long term gives us greater flexibility in that, if there comes a time when the unit is no longer required, it can be moved and used to help another household with minimal disturbance to the either the current or receiving home and family".

"Even if the hoist is not required at the new home, it is easy and inexpensive to remove and 'make good'".

The C3S prefabricated unit provides bespoke, re-locatable accommodation that cuts work and disruption on site by up to 95% compared to traditional build techniques.

The first to achieve LANTAC approval, it is Local Authority Building Control Type Approval certified.

Constructed using state-of-the-art materials, to all current Building Regulations and DDA requirements, each unit- ranging from a complete housing unit to a toilet module- is factory built and equipped to designs developed following in-depth consultation with the occupier and his or her family, carers and consultants.

Once fabricated, and finished to blend in with adjoining property, the unit is simply craned into position on site in a matter of hours, fixed to the receiving property and services connected, making it ready for occupation.
