The first 34 trainees to participate in the 'Building the Future' initiative have been recruited, providing the start of a much-needed relief to Construction companies.

The first 34 trainees to participate in the 'Building the Future' initiative have been recruited, providing the start of a much-needed relief to Construction companies in the city that are currently experiencing a shortage of trained workers 'Building the Future' is a two-pronged initiative it provides a 'one stop shop' service for construction recruitment and development needs, while simultaneously opening up career pathways into the construction industry to create a local skilled construction workforce

The trainees are host employed by Kier Sheffield LLP as part of their rapid response team, and will also be trained by Sheffield College to a minimum of NVQ level 2, with the opportunity to reach level 3 and beyond.

The recruits were selected from over 100 applicants, with 34 being selected to train in plumbing, bricklaying, painting, decorating and joinery.

This first phase is a pilot project to show that the OBuilding the Future1 initiative is effective, but also to highlight why further funding is required.

Making the pilot project work has required the input of several partner organisations, including Jobcentre Plus, Action Team, CITB, Sheffield City Council Employment Unit, JOBMatch, Sheffield College, Kier Sheffield LLP and JobNet.

Funding has been provided by Kier Sheffield LLP, New Deal Environmental Task Force Option, European Social Fund via the Equal Project and Action Team.

Trudy Roberts, 31 from Parson Cross, is a trainee to benefit from the OBuilding the Future1 initiative.

Prior to joining the scheme she had a number of different jobs, but no real career path and little job satisfaction.

She is looking forward to embarking on a career where there is a constant demand for work.

She says: "I'm really looking forward to having a trade.

Training in construction, with a particular focus on joinery will be a good long term move for me, and will give me great financial security too." Michelle Wood, Recruitment and Development Consultant for Construction JOBMatch comments: "The construction industry still has a traditional and fragmented approach to labour.

There is a vast skills shortage in the industry, and with the volume of new build planned for the city centre alone in the next five years there is a huge problem to address.

We are confident that this is the best approach to take to address the problem, and is an excellent means of planning for the future as well as meeting short term needs.

The initial response to applications for 'Building the Future' is particularly encouraging, and the 34 founding trainees are raring to go." Robin Bruce, 26 from Sheffield has chosen to join the Construction JOBMatch programme after he found it difficult to progress in his career without appropriate qualifications.

The training at Sheffield College will allow him to gain qualifications, while simultaneously benefiting from paid work experience.

"I'm really happy with this new opportunity," he said.

"Joining Kier's rapid response team and working in and around the city will be a great way to meet more people, carry on working and get my NVQ qualifications at the same time." Pete Birkett, Director of Sheffield College said: "By 2006 Britain will need an extra 37,000 Electricians, 56,000 Carpenters, 30,000 Plumbers and 30,500 Bricklayers.

The college is delighted to be part of this unique Construction JOBMatch project to fill the skills gaps in these areas, while giving local people the opportunity to reach their potential and gain professional qualifications." Kier Sheffield LLP is a key partner in the initiative.

David Sheridan, Managing Director comments: "We are absolutely committed to making Construction JOBMatch a success.

These 34 trainees are proof that we can make a difference by encouraging people into the industry from a diverse range of backgrounds, and we welcome the opportunity to make a difference to the economic and social regeneration of Sheffield and the sub-region.".
