Support services and construction company Carillion has been named preferred bidder for a GBP28m school project in York.

York's brand new secondary school moved one step closer today with the appointment of Carillion to design, build and lead the GBP28 million Joseph Rowntree School project, in York for City of York Council.

The winning designs were chosen by City of York Council's project team after a robust evaluation of the schemes.

Partnerships for Schools, the agency responsible for the national Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, is assisting York in the procurement of this One School Pathfinder project through the national PfS framework.

The framework provides local authorities with procurement and project management expertise gained through the BSF programme, and will ensure that similar economies of scale are achieved on the Joseph Rowntree School.

Carillion Regional Building will be responsible for the design and build of the new Joseph Rowntree School which aims to be open by the end of 2009.

Peter Dwyer, City of York Council's director of Learning, Culture and Children's Services said: "This is a tremendously exciting project not only because it creates a high quality new school for the city but because the new build will create a building equipped for modern educational practice.

"We are planning schools which can adapt to the future of education and this one will lead the way.

It is a very ambitious and exciting project which will significantly improve standards of education for the current and future young people of Joseph Rowntree School." Carillion Regional Director, Adrian Mole said: "We are delighted to have been named preferred bidder on this important project.

We look forward to working with City of York Council to bring this important project to life".

The new Joseph Rowntree school will be built at the back of the existing school and construction is due to start in Spring/Summer 2008.

It is a Pathfinder project which will inform the overall plans for York secondary schools in the future.

The full BSF programme for York will see the city's secondary schools transformed to deliver improved building standards for education.

The proposed school's state-of-the-art designs include a central high street with learning clusters, flexible spaces and personalised learning areas.

Full completion, which includes the demolition of the existing school and landscaping of the grounds, is expected to be in Spring/Summer 2010.

The design and building project will be used as an educational tool for pupils and will include a site classroom.

Links to various areas of the school curriculum will be made throughout the project, giving pupils an insight into how the project develops.
