The rapidly growing Marston Hotels group opened its latest luxury hotel recently and, like an increasing number of public buildings, it is already proving to be something of a showcase for the design talents of Daedalian Glass At the Nottingham Belfry, Daedalian's Davia Walmsley, worked closely with her opposite number, Sue Burbridge the group's Interior Designer, creating a set of three glass panels depicting a naval theme to reflect last year's 200th anniversary celebrations of Nelson's victory at Trafalgar

Located in the 'break-out' area of the hotel's conference facilities, the three panels - each one 2.5m high - are wall-mounted in dark wood frames.

In a sense, they replace wallpaper and present an eye-catching focal point greeting delegates on their arrival and as they exit the conference facilities for lunch, and morning and afternoon refreshments.

Each panel depicts an abstract theme of medals, buttons, navigational aids, ships' masts, pennants and rigging of the Napoleonic War period, designed and etched on to an iron-free 12mm toughened glass, which was also sandblasted to make the surface non-reflective.

The panels are an integral part of the overall theme of the hotel which is based on English heroes, not only military and naval, but also in engineering, architecture, writing and exploring.

While Daedalian has a growing reputation for experimenting with coloured glass, but has recently added painting techniques to its skills portfolio.

For the Nottingham Belfry, Daedalian's experts hand-painted the rear face of each panel, using a two-part epoxy mix designed to adhere to glass, and laying down a turquoise, blue and cream finish to complement the hotel decor.

Commented, Davia Walmsley: "We worked very closely with Sue Burbridge, knocking ideas about, and this eventually evolved into the naval theme and the use of paint".

Sue Burbridge agrees : "Working on ideas with Daedalion for this project was a progression from the initial brief, through various line drawings and colour samples until we arrived at the successful outcome of the completed panels which are there for all to see.

In fact, even though the hotel has only just opened, remarks on every aspect of the decor have already been very complimentary".

Daedalian's track record for producing stunning artistic glass design is rapidly becoming recognised across the UK.

Other hotels the company has worked with in recent years include the Stratford Manor (another for Marston hotel), as well as the Hope Street Hotel in Liverpool, the Huntington House in London, and the Aghadoe Heights in Killarney .

In the healthcare sector, the company has been active complementing the benefits of good interior design as an aid to improved patient recovery times.

Already a number of healthcare trusts and special care units have commissioned work from Daedalian.

Similarly, in both private and commercial sectors, artistic glass is playing an increasingly prominent role, both as a corporate statement and also as a pure design element - and Daedalian's reputation as an innovator is growing alongside this.
