Contracts for developers and individual homeowners are becoming an increasingly important market sector for glass designers, Daedalian Glass.

Contracts for developers and individual homeowners are becoming an increasingly important market sector for Lancashire-based glass designers, Daedalian Glass The catalyst for this expansion has been the company's Designer range of glazing featuring twelve sandblasted designs, etched onto both surfaces of the glass creating multi-tonal, three dimensional effects

Many of the designs lend themselves to production in differing proportions, some in overall patterns, others with clear glass borders or small clear areas.

What developers and homeowners are discovering is how the Designer range lends itself to a whole variety of effects inside and outside a property.

Typically, shower screens and enclosures are already catching on, whilst room dividers and door glazing are increasingly being specified.

More recently the company has noticed an interest in some of the designs for window glazing, where privacy and natural light can complement each other.

Among other recent commissions the Designer range has also been used for floors, ceilings, table tops, furniture, lighting and garden features.

"It's interesting how the cross-over from commercial to domestic takes a little time sometimes, but once it gets started it quickly picks up," says Chris Walmsley, co-founder of the company which celebrated its 20 anniversary this year.

"We launched the Designer range originally to illustrate to customers that we aren't simply bespoke glass designers, working to order for the commercial sector.

"The commercial sector has always been big for us, and the range was largely derived from what we'd done there.

It wasn't long after we'd launched it, however, that we noticed the enquiries from the housing market were building up." The outcome has been a number of contracts for homes across the country.

Sometimes the business has come in by word of mouth, other times through Daedalian's publicity activities, and also from work done in the commercial sector where other designers and architects have seen the potential the Designer range has in housing.

"It's certainly proved a winner," says Davia Walmsley, the company's design chief and co-founder with Chris.

"We like it because it adds variety to what we do and brings us into contact with an entirely new group of people with a different way of thinking and that's always good for us as designers." The designs can be applied to any thickness of annealed glass, toughened or laminated safety glass, laminated fire resistant glass and either shaped or curved glass.

Meanwhile, Daedalian's in-house laminating process allows for a choice of silver or coloured interlayer.

All the company's sandblasted glass is treated with ClearShield.

This achieves a low maintenance surface, is very resistant to finger marks etc, and also creates an attractive satin etched finish.

Daedalian has built up a reputation for working closely with all its clients - collaborating alongside each other at Daedalian's premise where appropriate - and through dialogue ensuring the specification and design fully meet expectations.

To this end clients will receive proof copies of the design and layout for approval prior to manufacture.

It is not unusual for Daedalian to supply a series of scale size samples if required.
