A guidance manual for testing concrete structures will be produced which will enable asset managers to determine the remaining service life of their structures.
The document will describe how to assess whether or not remedial works are necessary.
David Ball explains, "Public safety is paramount.
The cost of testing should be viewed firstly as a safety measure and as a sound, long-term investment in the light of the serious consequences and costs involved should a structural collapse occur.
The guide will be a "working tool" for those carrying out inspections, detailing up-to-date testing procedures for chloride ion migration, rates of carbonation, degree of sulphate attack, alkali silica reaction (ASR) and other deletrious mechanisms." The group's work is particularly pertinent as the construction industry moves towards increased sustainability and gives greater consideration to whole life costing.
