Coverage is up to seven times faster than conventional tiles at only a fraction of the weight, making it ideal for fast-track installation and allowing the thickness of the steel building frame to be reduced by up to 35%.

Ireland's largest independent retailer, Super Valu, have a reputation for shrewd purchasing and this proved to be no exception when it came to roofing the new 4,800 sq.

ft Emmett McConville's store at Monasterevin, in County Kildare.

McConville's are part of the group and initially the company had favoured natural slate, but after further consideration chose the Stratos tile from Decra Roof Systems, a company that is fast becoming the preferred roof tile supplier for many major retailers.

Like all the Decra roof systems, the Stratos tile is manufactured as a complete steel panel of tiles as opposed to individual tiles.

These coated, galvanised panels are extremely light, about one-seventh the weight of concrete tiles and need fewer fixings than conventional tiles, making them ideal for fast-track installations - covering at 2.54 tiles per m2, against 19.6 per m2 for natural slate tiles.

They are dry-fixed throughout and require virtually no maintenance.

A down turned front edge and an upturned rear edge ensure a strong, overlapping and interlocking roof covering, minimising the risk of any public liability injury and virtually ruling out the possibility of vandalism or forced entry.

Decra Stratos tiles have an attractive riven surface, which gives them a finish similar in appearance to a slate roof.

They are available in charcoal grey and pepperstone and do not fade or deteriorate with UV light.

Architects Kieran Lally specified charcoal grey as planning requirements demanded that the roof had to blend in with surrounding residential properties.

The traditional appearance of Decra tiles offers an attractive alternative to metal profile sheeting and reduces the risk of planning delays too.

Another consideration for the architects was that the building has a height restriction, resulting in a maximum pitch of 12 degrees.

The Decra Stratos tile offers complete weather protection even at this low pitch - not something that slate or other conventional tiles can match.

The building method used is a portal steel frame structure incorporating the Kingspan TS 1000 tile support system as the primary roof covering and insulant.

When combined with the Decra lightweight roof system, the developer can reduce the thickness of the steel required in the building by as much as 35% - a major saving that can be passed on to the client.

Decra offer a 30-year weather security guarantee and with their successful track record have a high rate of planning acceptability in the retail sector.

On completion the new Super Valu store will offer full supermarket facilities including a large delicatessen, pizza and sandwich bar and is considering establishing a creche.

Super Valu is part of Musgrave Super Valu Centra, the retail franchise of Musgrave Group, Ireland's largest grocery and food distributor.
