Decra Roof Systems, the UK's leading supplier of metal roofing systems, are becoming increasingly involved in off-site social housing developments.

Following the Deputy Prime Minister's initiative to increase the number of affordable houses being built using off-site construction techniques Decra Roof Systems, the UK's leading supplier of metal roofing systems, are becoming increasingly involved in this progressive method of construction for social housing They have partnering agreements with leading developers and contractors as well as joint initiatives with a number of Registered Social Landlords

Decra's roofing system is ideally suited to system building and off-site construction techniques, the tiles being manufactured as a complete steel panel of tiles, not as individual items.

The range is fully BBA certificated; available in six different profiles, two gauges and a wide variety of colour finishes - all ceramically glazed for long-term colour stability.

These coated, galvanised panels, which have the appearance of traditional tiles, are extremely light, about one-seventh the weight of concrete tiles and need fewer fixings than conventional tiles.

As a result installation is fast - on average covering at 2.27 tiles per m2, against 19.6 per m2 for conventional tiles.

A down turned front edge and an upturned rear edge ensure a strong overlapping and interlocking roof covering that is acoustically sound and fully resistant to capillary action or wind uplift.

Decra tiles are designed to provide an attractive and economic finish for all types of roof, some as low as 10deg pitch.

A comprehensive choice of accessories, including eaves, ridge and tile ventilators, complete the system, which is totally dry fixed throughout.

First project was in John Prescott's constituency.

Decra were one of the key suppliers in the completion of the first factory-finished volumetric two-storey semi's in the UK, a pilot scheme in John Prescott's constituency of Kingston upon Hull East.

Collaborating with George Wimpey and Britspace Modular Buildings, a pair of semi-detached houses were factory built around a steel frame in only three weeks, delivered to site, craned into position and assembled as interlocking modules in just five working days.

The services were then connected and the houses were complete and ready for occupation, looking no different to a traditional brick and block dwelling either internally or externally.

The units have a warm roof construction consisting of ready-made panels up to 6m long and 2.9m wide, comprising 175mm cold rolled steel channels, topped by 120mm Glascofoam polyurethane insulation, timber battens, counterbattens, sarking felt and Decra Classic roof tiles in a charcoal finish.

The roof space was unobstructed and the RSL's were able to convert the area into an additional room at a later date to cope with an increased requirement of the housing - without moving out.

Flats and houses in Romford development.

Built using the same system as the pilot scheme in Hull, Roedean Drive in Romford is again a social housing joint venture between George Wimpey and Britspace Modular Buildings, but this time involving social landlord the Guinness Trust.

In all 23 houses and a block of flats have been provided in Roedean Drive using off-site construction techniques and the development goes a long way to meeting the 'zero defects' criteria of the Egan Report.

There were no snagging problems and an exceptional finish was achieved as a result of the factory build conditions.

Since 1976, when Decra rethought roof construction, their composite roof tile systems have been manufactured and fitted to the same high standards as those recommended in the Egan report.

They can rightly claim to have been more than two decades ahead in innovation, waste minimisation, sustainability, cost reduction, supply chain management and partnering.
