DORMA has gained four major HandS accreditations; Bovis Lend Lease - Sub-contractor Accreditation Scheme, Constructionline, SAFEcontractor and Contractor Health and Safety (CHAS).

They form part of the company's comprehensive HandS strategy, implemented by DORMA's HSQE Manager, Stuart Wylie BSc., DipSM, MIIRSM With over 20 years of senior Health and Safety management experience, Stuart has developed DORMA's Health and Safety Management System (HSEMS), positioning the company as the benchmark for other sector competitors to match

DORMA was one of the first companies in its sector to be accredited by Bovis Lend Lease under its recently introduced sub-contractor accreditation scheme.

It is a concept that involves a stringent assessment of the sub-contractors Health and Safety Management Systems.

The scheme is unusual in that no third party is involved, as Bovis undertakes its own assessment by means of a comprehensive audit known as an 'Environmental Health and Safety Compliance Survey'.

Once Bovis was satisfied that all criteria were being met by DORMA, a certificate was issued that qualifies DORMA to work on Bovis contracts for a period of five years before any re-assessment is necessary.

DORMA is also accredited by Constructionline.

This is the UK's register of pre-qualified local and national construction and construction-related suppliers.

The concept was first proposed as part of the Latham Report and has now developed in line with the needs of modern procurement.

The OGC Common Minimum Standards and The Local Government Task Force recommend using Constructionline as part of the pre-qualification and tendering process.

SAFEcontractor accreditation is another.

Clients have a legal obligation to ensure that contractors operate in a safe way and must assess their health and safety arrangements.

This can be carried out through SAFEcontractor, which sets down the required technical standards in two categories.

'General criteria' covers all applicants, and then there is 'specific criteria' which relates to the particular work activities of the applicant company.

The fourth accreditation is the Contractor Health and Safety assessment scheme (CHAS), which has been developed over the years by local authority health and safety and procurement professionals, with the support of the Health and Safety Executive.

The scheme is available for use by any public or private sector organisations when shortlisting contractors and suppliers who apply to work for them.

Participation in the CHAS scheme ensures that a company is compliant with all important aspects of health and safety law.
