D-Tec video smoke detection delivers early warning
D-Tec's advanced CCTV camera-based Video Smoke Detection system is being used to provide a rapid response to potential fires in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel.
Typical applications for VSD are external areas, high roof and large volume structures, and unmanned locations.
These include both on and offshore oil and gas installations; civil and military aircraft hangars; rail facilities and road tunnels; and any buildings that have atria or other areas that are otherwise difficult or impossible to protect.
VSD is also used for external smoke detection, as it is the only system on the market that is capable of detecting forest fires or outbreaks around sensitive or high security locations The D-Tec system detects fire using standard CCTV cameras, and was originally developed in the late 1990s as a reliable early warning fire detection solution for nuclear-powered turbine halls.
However, its significant advantages over other detection systems were soon realised and, today, D-Tec's FM [Factory Mutual] approved system is recognised around the world as a mainstream fire safety solution.
To date, D-Tec installations have been completed in the UK, Ireland, Norway, Australia, the USA, throughout the Middle East, South Africa and Italy.
In addition to its UK headquarters, the company has engineers placed strategically with partners in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates; in Sydney, Australia; Los Angeles in the USA and Johannesburg, South Africa.
D-Tec's market leadership position has recently been strengthened by the introduction of FireVu, which allows remote monitoring of a potential fire to ensure 24-hour-a-day fast response, as well as remote testing and diagnostics.
The new TCP/IP [Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol]-based system is easier to use and maintain than the company's now well-established VSD-8 system.
Significantly, FireVu will also allow smoke detection to be more comprehensively integrated with security and facilities management systems.
FireVu's importance to the advancement of fire safety and the protection of lives and property was endorsed by its recent selection for inclusion in the New Product Live Zone at International Fire Expo 2005 in Birmingham, England.
