Newport based specialist contractor, Dudley, has started work on a GBP 6 million refurbishment and extension for long-standing client Tesco in Talbot Green, Llantrisant.

Newport based specialist contractor, Dudley, has started work on a GBP 6 million refurbishment and extension for long-standing client Tesco in Talbot Green, Llantrisant When complete this will be the largest Tesco store in Wales

The total area for the development is 33,000 sq ft, 25,000 of which will extend the sales area increasing the floor space from 80,000 sq ft to 105,000 sq ft.

The project comprises a mezzanine floor to house a new customer cafe, home entertainments, extended clothing sales area and staff accommodation.

The first phase of the work is due for completion in May 05 and the second phase to be completed in August 05.

Prior to any work on the actual project, it took Dudley's 6 weeks to create temporary areas for sales, staff and the warehouse, in order to minimise disruption to trading.

During the work nothing is taken off sale, including the customer cafe so Dudley's, therefore, create a temporary sales area, by converting part of the warehouse.

This involved upgrading lighting, installing a vinyl floor and CCTV coverage.

The warehouse was then housed in a temporary 400m2 marquee in the loading bay behind the store.

Due to the location, Dudley's carried out a revised lorry tracking system and issue a risk assessments for store deliveries.

The Tesco customer cafe also draws people to the store, so a temporary customer cafe and toilets were constructed adjacent to the building Dudley's also provided temporary staff accommodation including a staff canteen, changing rooms and offices during completion of the works including phone lines, tills and cash conveyors.

Dudley's were initially involved in the shop fitting and Aluminium facades when the GBP 8.2 million Llantrisant store first opened just over a year ago.

The exciting project is the latest for Tesco, for whom Dudley's have been involved with for over 35 years.

The first mezzanine development was at the Gatwick Extra site, in Surrey and the first mezzanine structure that allowed an upper retail area was at Forestffach, Swansea two years ago and proved to be a turning point for the company.

Mark Jerman, project manager for Dudley's, said: "This is a difficult job as the Tesco store continues to operate 24 hours a day, the key to success has been in the preparation of the site".

"We had to ensure that Tesco do not see any disruption to their sales and this has been achieved through the temporary accommodation provided by Dudley's".

"I look forward to the next few months in Llantrisant and seeing the job completed in August this year." The most recent local project for which Dudley's has been employed is the new Fire Brigade Training College in Pontprennau, Cardiff where Dudley's will be responsible for the supply and installation of aluminium curtain walling, doors, windows and louvres to the Training Building and Appliance Bay.
