On Top Of The World With Corian
As part of the pedestrianisation project for Trafalgar Square, the World Squares Cafe, is a stylish new coffee shop, cleverly integrated into the terrace of this popular London gathering place.
The stand-out feature of the caf?'s very contemporary interior, designed by Foster and Partners, is a set of slab-style tables and cylindrical stools made from Corian in pure Glacier White.
A landmark of great significance, Trafalgar Square has been sympathetically renovated to incorporate convenient facilities such as the new Caf? - which can expect to entertain a vast amount of visitor traffic.
It was crucial therefore to use materials that not only look great, but also offer excellent durability and ease of maintenance.
Corian, the original solid surface, made only by DuPont, was specified for three communal bench tables, measuring 4 metres each and also for the weight balanced stools, around which the material has been thermoformed to a 360 degree radius.
The effect is sleek, bright and very smart.
The solidity of the material lends a robustness to the design, while the clean, white surfaces add a refreshing lightness to a subterranean interior.
The tables and stools were made by Clarendon Fabrications.
