Height-adjustable worktops made from DuPont Corian have been installed in the 'easy-access' kitchen of SIA House, the new, purpose built Headquarters of the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA).

DuPont Corian solid surfaces specified for the new Spinal Injuries Association Height-adjustable worktops made from DuPont Corian have been installed in the 'easy-access' kitchen of SIA House, the new, purpose built Headquarters of the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) The centre, funded by a £2 million appeal, was meticulously planned to demonstrate how access, independence and employment for spinal cord injured and other disabled people can be achieved with the right kind of design

The building design features state-of- the-art technology and is also environmentally sustainable.

Adam Thomas, the kitchen designer from Design Matters KBB , who is himself spinal cord injured and a wheelchair-user, recommended using Corian to create the kitchen's worksurfaces because of its versatile design and functional properties.

In order for the kitchen to be fully accessible to both wheelchair and non-wheelchair users, all the worksurfaces were designed to be fully height adjustable at the touch of a button.

Corian was also a natural choice for Adam because of its hygienic properties and practical benefits: "The surface is sleek and functionally seamless, which is ideal as many disabled people need to slide pots and pans around rather than lift them." This seamlessness, combined with the fact that Corian is non-porous, also makes the worktop easy to clean and maintain.

Further advantages to using Corian in easy access kitchens are options such as colour contrasting waterfall edges on the worksurfaces.

This can be useful for people with visual impairment, coordination difficulties or arthritis, because multiple colours help to demarcate space.

At the same time, the waterfall edge helps to stop minor spills reaching the floor.

Adam continues, "I wanted to design a multi-use kitchen for all staff and visitors to the SIA Headquarters".

"It helps disabled staff and it also shows disabled visitors what independence in the home can mean." Regarding the end results, he says, "I'm delighted to have worked with Corian on this project - the company's contribution, from head office to fabricators, has been fantastic." Paul Smith, Executive Director of SIA said: "We were really impressed with the product's practical and aesthetic qualities".

"We were also thrilled at the generosity of DuPont Surfaces in the UK, who donated both the material and its installation".

"This has enabled us to channel funds to where they're needed most - into services and support for spinal cord injured people and their families".

"We're indebted to Corian for their support in helping us realise our dream".

"SIA House offers the opportunity for disabled people to be independent and we are hoping that some of the concepts we've used will be taken on board in the wider commercial world.".
