Millennium Pharmaceuticals Use Friatherm System
Completed earlier this year, Millennium Pharmaceuticals R D Ltd's new high tech premises in Cambridge has utilised Friatherm pipework from Durapipe UK during the construction process.
The multi-million pound investment, designed by Bovis Lend Lease Pharmaceuticals has led to the creation of a purpose-built discovery research facility and with a site of its size and diversity of function, it was essential that the pipework specified was able to accommodate the various demands of the building.
To meet the potable water requirements for all of the facilities within the building, Friatherm pipes were specified as part of a £3.5 million pipe work package.
Approximately 10,000m of Friatherm pipe products and a range of sizes - up to 80mm in diameter - were used throughout the premises, offering significant benefits for all parties involved.
"The Friatherm system achieved the cost savings required by the client", Gary Smith of contractors, Kershaw Mechanical Services explains.
"There was a substantial amount of pipework that needed to be installed in a range of locations including laboratories, write up and amenity areas and the Friatherm system allowed us the flexibility to meet the cost efficiency needs." The specification of the high grade PVC-C Friatherm pipework also solved the problem of aggressive water to which the Cambridge region is prone.
"We have previously encountered pin pricking in pipes of alternative materials, caused by the aggressive water situation," continues Mr Smith.
"This occurs especially when the water is left to stagnate.
The composition of the Friatherm pipework eliminates the possibility of pipe degradation through the water supply." Friatherm has the advantage of being easily installed, making the system essential for fast track projects such as the three storey, steel framed building project for Millennium Pharmaceuticals R D Ltd.
Furthermore, with no hot works required or pipe end preparation, the system can provide huge savings on installed costs and a 50 year working life span.
