Durapipe UK reveals that installation costs are becoming an increasingly greater priority for the building services industry.

Durapipe UK reveals that installation costs are becoming an increasingly greater priority for the building services industry A third of all contractors polled in a recent survey by Durapipe UK agreed that the overall installation cost of a project has become the overriding factor when specifying pipe and fitting products

Over recent years, the introduction of reports such as Egan's: Re-thinking Construction and the growth of projects such as PFI, has led to a greater demand for reduced lifecycle costings.

As a result, contractors are increasingly more responsible for reducing installation costs overall, including both the choice of material and the labour costs involved.

In light of increased installation cost considerations, plastic pipe work specification is on the rise.

In the last year, 80% of those polled by Durapipe UK stated that they considered plastics over other traditional materials, as they strive to meet the stringent lifecycle costings.

Plastic materials can offer superior labour cost savings.

BSRIA state that installing Durapipe ABS for chilled water applications, compared with traditional steel material, can typically offer a 43% total installed cost saving, coupled with a 60% reduction in labour cost.

The new interest in plastics was further fuelled by the steel and copper price hikes last year, which saw steel tube prices rise by more than 90% and copper tube prices increase by a third.

Durapipe UK has seen a significant rise in enquiries or specifications of its plastic pipe systems from conventional specifiers of steel and copper pipe work within this time span and predicts that this will increase further this year, as Martyn Rowlands, Head of Marketing of Durapipe UK explains: "It is not surprising that specifiers and contractors are increasingly turning to plastic materials for their pipe work requirements, as it can offer immediate total installed cost savings".

"With simple and quick jointing, plastic requires no hot works, so offers cheaper site insurance and is also easier to handle on site".

"Following the steel and copper price increases we recorded an increased level of interest in our high performance plastic pipe work and as conventional specifiers of steel and copper begin to switch to plastic, we are expecting an even bigger increase in specifications, as contractors realise the significant cost savings and excellent benefits plastics can offer to meet overall installation and life cycle costings.".
