Pipework from Durapipe UK has been specified for the construction of a major new hospital facility in Derby.

Pipework from Durapipe UK has been specified for the construction of a major new hospital facility in Derby.

The GBP333 million project sees Derby City General Hospital and Derby Royal Infirmary being consolidated onto a single site.

The re-development will result in a new acute hospital and specialist care diagnostics centre opening on the existing city hospital site.

For the pipework requirements, contractors Skanska has specified Durapipe ABS, up to 200mm, for the chilled water services, which will be installed into 128,000 square metres of new hospital buildings and 29,800 square metres of existing buildings.

Durapipe ABS has been selected for the large-scale development because of the cost benefits it can offer to the NHS Trust, from the initial installation through to the on-going maintenance over the life span of the project.

The lightweight material will also provide advantages for the installers, as the pipework is quicker and easier to handle on site than alternative products.

The new acute hospital is scheduled for completion in Spring 2009 and will boast 1,159 beds and 35 operating theatres.
