in2 school sewer repair for Thames Water

A Dyno-Rod product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jun 29, 2007

in2 no-dig pipe replacement system was the recommended solution when Dyno-Rod were approached by Thames Water to identify the best way to repair a defective length of sewer.

The sewer, manhole to manhole, was 25 metres long and the major issue was that a section of the clay sewer was deformed by 20% approximately four metres upstream from the manhole, which meant a cured-in-place (CIPP) pipe was not suitable as a means of repair.

The sewer, at this point also ran close to the school building in an area surrounded by small trees and this meant excavation could not be used either as a method of repair.

As the initial part of the sewer was encased in concrete, the pipe bursting option was also infeasible.

To install discrete sections of in2 pipe upstream from the existing manhole, located near the school building, Dyno-Rod used a specialist hydraulic ram.

The front section of in2 pipe was guided through the deformed section of sewer using a winch located over the upstream manhole.

Finally a Localine localised repair system was installed at the upstream end of the in2 pipe to seal the clay pipe to the in2 pipe.

This would prevent sewerage running down the outside of the in2 pipe, thus returning the sewer to full capacity.

The job took just two days to complete including preparation, installation of the in2 pipe, localised repairs, making good the manholes and a final CCTV survey.

The job was completed during the school's half term to prevent disruption.

The major benefit to Thames Water was that the structural integrity of the sewer was fully restored without the need for expensive and disruptive excavation and with only the damaged area of the sewer being renovated.

The compact size of the in2 equipment and pipe meant that the work could be carried out from the existing manholes.

The client was satisfied as the job was completed both within the time frame allocated and within budget.

The technical advantages of the in2 system over excavation, CIPP, pipe bursting and sliplining were once again clearly proven.
