EC Harris' Nottingham team has been selected to manage one of the seven millennium communities being promoted by the ODPM and English Partnerships.
EC Harris' Nottingham team has been selected to manage one of the seven millennium communities being promoted by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and English Partnerships.
The team has been chosen to manage the project, which on completion will generate 1500 new jobs.
South Lynn Millennium Community/Utopia, in the market town of King's Lynn in Norfolk, will be the fourth millennium community to be developed and represents the only one to be driven by a private developer.
The regeneration of the South Lynn Millennium Village/Utopia by Morston Assets was proposed in 2002 and is expected to take ten years to complete.
At a cost of £150 million, it represents a mixed-use redevelopment comprising 900 houses, 600,000 sq ft of office and retail space, a primary school and a health centre.
Morston Assets has called on the expertise of EC Harris to provide quantity surveying, project management and overall planning supervision, as well as ensuring the standards of millennium communities are implemented.
David Dodge, of Morston Assets stated: "The millennium project is one of five major mixed-use redevelopment projects that we are developing across the UK using a project team based in Nottingham.
It highlights the breadth of specialist knowledge and technical skills focussed upon bringing forward redevelopment which is based in the East Midlands".
Commenting Kevin Chrisp, lead partner from the Nottingham office of EC Harris said: "The South Lynn Millennium Village/Utopia represents an exciting landmark project that will not only create jobs but also create new community facilities benefiting approximately 4500 people.
"The first phase of the project starts shortly and will take 14 months.
This includes 109 houses and the business park.
English Partnerships will start work on the infrastructure for the new community facilities and school.
"Bringing forward the site of South Lynn Millennium Village brings back into use over 70 acres of brownfield land, which was unused for over 20 years.
The site was historically home to a range of industrial processes including gas, tar and fertiliser production.
As part of an East Midlands based team which included Nottingham based Geodyne and BSP Consulting, we project managed the successful remediation of the fertiliser works, bringing forward this first phase of development.
"The civil and structural engineering service is being provided by Nottingham's BSP Consulting.
They are also designing the external Homezone areas and the sewers and roads for the site".
The Millennium Communities is attracting some of the UK's most talented architects and successful developers.
The design team includes Capital Percy Thomas (Architects), BSP Consulting (Civil and Structural Engineering), Geodyne (Geotechnical and Contaminated Land), Consult (Mechanical and Electrical Design), Sheils Flynn (Landscape Architects) and E C Harris (Project Management, Quantity Surveying and Planning Supervision).
