EC Harris is celebrating after being crowned as Commercial Services Company of the Year for the third year running.
The centre is part of a new £51m national network of centres dedicated to improving the teaching of sciences in schools across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Peter Callaghan of EC Harris, said: "Our main aim as project managers and quantity surveyors was to ensure that the project was delivered on time and within the £11.1 million budget for the construction of both the centre and its dedicated residential block".
""The demanding programme was achieved by placing advanced orders for steelwork, piling with a substantial enabling earthworks package to clear and form the site in advance of the main contractor starting on site.
Early warning meetings and risk management with the client, sponsor, design team and main contractor were instrumental in achieving overall delivery.
"In keeping with its green credentials the centre also includes a number of BREEAM initiatives including green sedum roof to the resource centre and geothermal heating was used on the project".
"It also has a green policy where no additional campus parking was provided, and all delegates are advised to use public transport, taxis and cycling therefore protecting the environmental interests of the surrounding community".
The landmark development was designed and built following the publication of the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Report 'Science in Schools' in 2001 when the Department of Further Education and Science and the Wellcome Trust jointly announced the Science Learning Centres initiative.
In the first year 1,000 teachers and technicians are expected to attend courses at the centre.
This is expected to double in the second year, rising to over 5,000 teachers every year from 2013.
The purpose-built centre is well-equipped with laboratories, an ICT suite where science teachers can experiment with and create their own multi-media classroom material and a resource centre with the latest educational tools, books, journals, gadgets and electronic resources.
The centre is operated by the White Rose University Consortium, comprising the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York together with Sheffield Hallam University.
In addition to the purpose-built centre in York, nine regional centres offer teachers the opportunity to attend courses nearer to home.
