International property and construction consultants, EC Harris has been appointed to manage the refurbishment scheme of the Geoffrey Pope building in the University of Exeter.

International property and construction consultants, EC Harris has been appointed to manage the £2.7million refurbishment scheme of the Geoffrey Pope building in the University of Exeter The firm is responsible for the project management, cost consultancy, planning supervision, and architectural, mechanical, electrical and structural engineering design for the refurbishment of a 1960s laboratory block that is due to complete in September this year

Due to the tight deadline for completion, the process of appointment needed to be as efficient as possible so that work could begin straight away.

Consequently, EC Harris was appointed for the architectural, MandE and structural design work via the OGC (Office of Government Commerce) framework.

This allows public bodies to award contracts without having to go through the often lengthy and expensive OJEU competitive tender process.

As the central hub of the School of Biosciences, the building spans five floors and the refurbishment plans involve the conversion of some of the existing chemistry facilities into biosciences laboratories over three of the floors.

Other chemistry facilities will be converted into a new state-of-the-art microscopy suite containing scanning and transmission electron microscopes, whilst further chemistry facilities will be converted to house the administration, ancillary support and post-graduate areas.

Installation of a new bioinformatics computer suite has just been completed in the building to facilitate the rapid growth in computer use in biological sciences in the 21st Century.

Nick Cryer partner at EC Harris in Bristol commented: "We have a great deal of experience in laboratory refurbishment combined with knowledge of working for educational and research based institutions to deliver specific needs".

"This expertise in conjunction with the use of the efficient and cost effective OGC procurement service means that the project will meet the strict timeline for delivery by the start of the new academic year whilst also causing minimum disruption to those that are still currently using the building".

Others working on the project include architects LCE Archimed, MandE Engineers Terry Hearne and Partners and structural engineers Ove Arup and Partners.
