EC Harris has been instrumental in supporting the successful delivery Terminal 5, BAA's new GBP4.3 billion international gateway to the UK, on time and on budget.

T5, which opened for business at 0400 on Thursday, March 27, is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe, and was a complex web of 16 major interconnecting projects and 140 sub-projects EC Harris has worked with BAA on the Terminal 5 project since 1995

Mike Knox, leader of EC Harris' services across Terminal 5, said: "The sheer scale of Terminal 5, the logistic challenges and the complexity of interfacing between projects and sub-projects has made it unique.

It was not just a building, it is a major infrastructure project - and one that took place at the busiest international airport in the world.

"Members of our delivery team have been recognised as an extension of BAA's management team and they have been actively engaged in leading and working with the integrated teams across the Terminal 5 Programme.

This includes the comprehensive time and cost project controls solution across all projects to ensure Terminal 5 opens on time on Thursday (March 27).

"Knox added: "We have learnt a great deal from the experience of Terminal 5 and recognise that with this learning we can take our performance on other major construction projects for our clients across the world to another level.

"Amongst the lessons learnt have been strong and clear leadership.

BAA's strong leadership coupled with clear communications is another key reason the project has been successful.

One of the root causes of many projects' failure to complete on budget and on time is a lack of clear client leadership and communication." An underlying platform for the success of Terminal 5 was the T5 Agreement.

It allowed integrated teams of suppliers within the project to act as a team in a non-adversarial way based on the three principles of the agreement - commitment, trust and teamwork.

"This ethos of integrated teamwork has been critical.

Because BAA holds all the risk, suppliers focus on finding solutions to problems, rather than allocating blame.

It manages the cause, rather than the effect of obstacles to success and the result is that BAA expects world class performance from integrated teams working together.

"This innovative approach and solutions at Terminal 5, with 'right first time' being a guide for achieving best practice' has set new industry standards that all future major infrastructure projects will benefit from", added Knox.

EC Harris' role in delivering Terminal 5 on budget and on time was central to it being named by BAA last July as its commercial manager on Heathrow East Terminal (HET) project - BAA's next major capital project at Heathrow.

In addition to Terminal 5 and HET, EC Harris' aviation team have experience of working on projects across the world, including, Egypt, France, Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, the Philippines, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, UAE, and the UK.
