Keeping Fit With The Quiet Life
Ecophon's Super G wall panels are a robust product which has a facing applied that will withstand the impact from a cricket ball or a tennis racket and ensure sound levels were kept to a minimum.
Sports centres can be noisy places, so when St Paul's Community Sports Academy in Bristol was designed, local architects gcp Chartered Architects took the step of specifying Ecophon products to ensure sound levels were kept to a minimum Some 400m2 of Ecophon's Super G wall panels were supplied in a grey finish which, as Class A absorbers of sound reduce the reverberation within the building

System selected by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council's architects was Ecophon's Gedina, providing a highly robust solution, very good noise attenuation as well as crisp lines.
Also supplied was about 300m2 of Gedina E ceiling tile system which, again, features Class A acoustic properties.
Well suited to applications requiring a standard ceiling which is easy to install and demount, but where strict functional requirements are needed, Ecophon Gedina E is installed in an exposed grid system, creating a ceiling with shadow effect that highlights each tile and partially conceals the grid system.
Owing to its structure, glasswool is very strong in relation to its weight, which means Gedina is very stable, easy to handle and has good mechanical properties.
Super G and Gedina also have the advantages of Class 0 spread of flame - another important factor in a building where the public is constantly visiting.
Apart from this work in the main sports hall, the company was also involved in supplying products for a corridor leading off from the atrium reception area.
This corridor features three skylights with 45 degree angles leading up to them, which have been covered in Focus D planks.
The Focus range which comes in several variants - offers opportunities to create an optimised acoustic ceiling.
According to the manufacturer, no limitations need be imposed by either the physical condition of the premises or the aesthetic demands with this collection.
The wide range of edge designs, forms, colours and patterns give virtually endless opportunities for creating environments that meet strict demand on both function and form.
For applications where a suspended ceiling with a concealed grid is required, but individual tiles must be easily demountable.
Focus D is the ideal solution.
To bring the finishing touch to this corridor, Ecophon also supplied curved lighting extrusions to provide uplighting for these skylight areas.
This comprised of a curved aluminium extrusion along with the light fittings.
These light coffers are a further option from the standard Ecophon range.
It was the architect, gcp Chartered Architects, that contacted Ecophon in the first place, because of the manufacturer's standing in the industry for acoustic products.
As Area Sales Manager for the South West of England and South Wales Paul Lake explains: 'It is surprising how many sports centres are built with scant regard for the noise levels.
In my experience, it is difficult to get people to appreciate the subject of acoustics in sports halls, so I was delighted when project architect gcp Chartered Architects contacted me.
This architect saw the obvious benefits of acoustic panels, at an early stage of the building's design." Director in charge of the project for gcp, Jonathan Platt states: 'While we have been involved with this type of building in the past, I feel that many Sports Centres are built with no account taken for noise levels.
Reducing noise levels enhances the comfort factor for those using sports centres and increases repeat business".
Just a few examples of the extensive Ecophon range have ensured the people of Bristol using the St Paul's Community Sports Academy can enjoy a good all-body work-out - except for their ears. Request a free brochure from Ecophon ...
