Ecophon Master allows pupils to use
projection TV

The construction of a new restaurant at a Church of England High School in Harrogate, North Yorkshire included the installation of a state of the art video/digital projector.

The construction of a new restaurant at a Church of England High School in Harrogate, North Yorkshire included the installation of a state of the art video/digital projector It is only now however, some 18 months later, that the introduction of a new Master has enabled them to make use of the state-of-the-art screen

Rather than an addition to the teaching staff though, the Master in question is the top of the range acoustic ceiling system manufactured by Ecophon Limited, and installed across the entire soffit to the restaurant at St Aidans C of E High School, Harrogate, by Claxton Ceilings Limited.

The problem surrounded the unusually long reverberation time that the restaurant hall exhibited and which made many sounds inaudible.

Although this was a new extension, its cruciform layout and combination of hard surfaces, such as glass and laminate, meant that individual sounds took some four seconds to die away.

The design practice involved, Richard Eves Architects contacted Ecophon to advise on a suitable solution; leading to the installation of some 300 square metres of Master F Alpha.

The 600 x 600 x 40 mm thick acoustic tiles offer the highest level of absorption available and are fixed direct to the existing soffit.

The school's Deputy Head Teacher, Steve Hatcher, comments: "In the first week after the installation took place we were able to listen to music, watch a film; and were able hear all the words clearly".

"The work has made a fantastic difference - it is a totally different room".

"We are looking forward to working with Claxton Ceilings and Ecophon on other projects in the future." Claxton Ceilings' operatives made use of the tiles' tongue and groove edge detail as they screwed them to the plasterboard ceiling, completing the task during the spring bank holiday. The ceiling is in fact divided into five separate areas by downstand beams.
