Ecophon design team masters conical
ceiling

Ecophon designed and supplied a ceiling to improve a school halls acoustics, using their Focus range of ceiling tiles which are available in seven sizes up to 2400mm long.

West Hunslet Primary School, designed by the Leeds City Council's in-house team of architects - Strategic Design Alliance, is a single storey building creatively shaped like a spiral ammonite shell The circular school hall is located at the centre and has a conical roof making a striking visual statement

Members of the architectural team, supplied Ecophon with a plan and section drawing of the ceiling, and from this Ecophon's design team produced an installation grid layout.

The layout retained the conical shape of the ceiling and skylight at the apex.

By using a combination of the different sizes of Focus, the final striking design of the acoustic ceiling was achieved.

An acoustic calculation performed by the team confirmed that the ceiling - made of high density glass wool ceiling tiles coated with highly sound-absorbent Akutex T - would easily exceed the relevant acoustic building regulation for new school buildings in Building Bulletin 93.

The ceiling grid plan was passed directly to the contractor who assembled the grid.

Focus A ceiling tiles, which are available in seven square and rectangular sizes, were delivered to the site where they were simply cut to fit the grid as required using a Stanley knife.

Indeed, Ecophon's comprehensive technical support, including a free design service, is available to all specifiers.

It includes the provision of full size mock-up facilities and assistance with reflected ceiling plans.

Lux level calculations for complex projects as well as indicative reverberation calculations are also provided - vital in areas such as schools, offices, healthcare and manufacturing facilities where the acoustic conditions are critical. Request a free brochure from Ecophon ...
