Edgetech Super Spacer in Abu Dhabi mosque

An Edgetech product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jan 20, 2009

Edgetech's Super Spacer has been used in the windows of the third largest mosque in the world, the Sheikh Zayed in Abu Dhabi.

With more than 2,500 different free forms, around 5,000 square metres of installed glass and more than 8 kilometres of Super Spacer, the building project is unique.

For the motorised glass sliding doors, each weighing up to 17 tonnes, numerous material tests had to be carried out onsite to ensure that the aluminium structure could be installed without warping.

Work with nonstandard sizes is normal business for the approx 100 employees of the freeform specialists Alubat.

"We don't have any standard products.

We are specialists in the design and manufacture of free forms - and that's what we do best," says Heiner Berizzi, managing partner of the IG specialists Alubat.

"For work of this nature and complexity, we exclusively use Edgetech's Super Spacer: it is easy to process and you can switch between various sizes and thicknesses in a matter of seconds.

"Without the use of Super Spacer in the elaborate windows and glass doors, the Sheikh Zahed mosque would have been virtually inconceivable," says Heiner.

"Metal spacers are too complicated and time-consuming to process.

The formidable amount of free form windows in the mosque required a spacer that could be simply and flexibly formed into any conceivable shape, as well as being able to withstand the climate conditions in Abu Dhabi.

Edgetech's Super Spacer was our only choice".

A structure of awesome dimensions with a breathtakingly splendid interior, the Sheikh Zayed mosque in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, impresses visitors not just with its sheer size, but also with its immeasurable diversity of colours and forms.

With a total space of around 50,000 square metres, the third-largest mosque in the world can hold up to 40,000 worshippers.

Even more magnificent than the dimensions of this house of worship are the ornate windows and doors decorated with intricate metal- and glasswork.

Anyone entering the Sheikh Zayed mosque is instantly taken by the almost endless variations in lines and lighting: each dome perfect down to the smallest detail, one window more beautiful than the next, each positively competing for the eye's attention.

With parent company Noblesse based in the Palatinate city of Berg, Alubat couldn't imagine a better business partner than Edgetech: "We have been using Super Spacer since 1997 and are in close contact with the Edgetech team, who have provided outstanding advice to us on selection of the processing lines during completion of the large-scale Sheikh Zayed mosque project".

For Alubat, work on the mosque was also a job that couldn't be topped: "A contract like this only comes around once in a lifetime.
