Eleco comments on garden grabbing crackdown
Eleco has commented on the government's decision to allow local councils to reclassify gardens as greenfield sites in an effort to combat 'garden grabbing'.
Previously, gardens were classified as brownfield sites, making it easier for house developers and self-builders to gain planning permission.
The government wants to limit this practice, particularly in urban areas with high population density and focus on renovating the 600,000 homes that are lying empty in the UK.
The decision will come as a blow to urban developers who are struggling to find plots on which to construct homes.
Tim Bates, marketing manager at Eleco commented: "The decision to reclassify gardens as greenfield sites could significantly reduce the number of plots available for new builds, making it even more crucial that plans are communicated in the clearest way possible when seeking planning permission".
"We anticipate that the resulting loss of brownfield sites will boost the number of renovation projects that are taken on by architects and developers".
