EST Publishes 'Whole House Specification'
Energy efficiency specifications for new housing is the topic of the latest guide from the Energy Saving Trust (EST).
This takes account of factors such as ozone depletion, mineral extraction and human toxicity.
In contrast to synthetic insulation, materials such as sheep's wool and cellulose fibre (recycled newspaper) have no artificial ingredients and have simple, low-energy manufacturing processes.
Christine Kinnear, Business Marketing Manager at the EST said: "All insulation materials improve energy efficiency in the home but natural materials have additional environmental benefits.
The chart shows that natural materials can be used effectively in many situations." The chart allows easy comparison of the thermal conductivity of different materials.
It also shows whether they are commonly used in roofs, walls or floors.
The Insulation Materials Chart is part of a wider EST initiative, the Energy Efficiency Best Practice in Housing programme, which provides information, advice and training to the building profession to deliver the best in energy efficiency in housing.
