Energy Saving Trust Aims For Zero-Emission Housing
The Energy Saving Trust (EST) wants Government to focus on zero-emission targets for new buildings when it introduces changes to building regulations in 2005.
Research by the Local Government Association (LGA) and EST last month revealed that while some local authorities are making progress in tackling climate change, statistics in certain areas show a downward trend in their responsiveness towards the issue.
Only one in ten authorities revealed that they have published an action plan on climate change.
Sixty-three per cent of authorities said they desperately needed additional support and training to help them produce their climate change emissions strategies.
EST's day-long seminars will feature key speakers from local authorities, private sector consultancies as well as experts from the EST and the Building Research Establishment (BRE).
They aim to help local authorities understand the world of energy efficiency, including the measures that can be put in place to reduce CO2 emissions from housing.
Housing in the UK accounts for thirty per cent of total UK energy consumption and is a major contributor to CO2 emissions.
Interactive 'breakout' sessions will review measures specific to a delegate's area of activity and allow local authority staff to learn more about practical local initiatives and case studies.
Attendees will have the opportunity to question the experts and receive a complementary information pack.
Keith Marsh, Director of the Energy Efficiency Best Practice in Housing Programme for the EST commented: "We're really excited about these seminars as they offer a great opportunity for the participants to gain valuable information on energy efficiency which will help them mitigate the effects of climate change.
The research shows that some local authorities have a poor record tackling energy efficiency issues.
Only thirty-seven per cent have got as far as setting targets for reducing emissions from their council housing stock.
With venues across the United Kingdom we hope that as many people as possible representing local authorities will be able to attend and as a result feel more confident in setting these targets." Topics to be covered include: What are the main energy efficiency measures? How much do they cost, and how much carbon dioxide and money do they save? What are U values and the Carbon index? Demystifying the language of energy efficiency.
The Building Regulations, Decent Homes and the Buildings Directive.
Explaining existing and future legislation for energy efficiency in housing.
