Lord Whitty, Minister for Sustainable Energy, unveiled the Flagship Home, one of the UK's most exciting energy efficiency projects.

The Flagship Home is a 19th century townhouse in the heart of London which has undergone a remarkable transformation courtesy of the Energy Saving Trust (EST), Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster City Council and SE Land and Estates A range of proven energy efficiency measures have been installed, helping to reduce fuel bills for tenants and cut carbon dioxide emissions by over 60 per cent

Speaking at the launch of the Flagship Home, Lord Whitty said, "About half of our target cuts in carbon emissions to combat climate change have to come through energy efficiency.

We need everybody to do their bit." Councillor Timothy Coleridge, Cabinet Member for Housing, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, commented: "The Flagship Home really leads the way.

Now landlords across the UK can clearly see why and how they can improve the energy efficiency of their properties." The Flagship Home received £90,000 of funding from the Innovation Programme which is run by the EST.

Councillor Angela Harvey, Westminster City Council Cabinet Member for Housing, said: "This project proves that 'Hard to Treat Homes', can be improved in a cost effective way, as well as showing how older properties can easily embrace new technologies like solar energy and heat recovery ventilation".

Vincent de Rivaz, Chief Executive of London Energy's parent company EDF Energy, said: "Energy efficiency is something that is not just vital to the environment, but is something that is vital to all households.

Over the past decade, we have provided 256,000 low energy appliances and insulated 73,000 homes across the capital." Landlords are encouraged to visit the Flagship Home between 25 October and 12 November 2004.
