HAZRED project awarded EU funding to help businesses reduce hazardous waste.

The Environment Agency is leading a European-funded project to develop a sector-led approach to help small businesses reduce the hazardous waste they produce and save money The three-year HAZRED project aims to demonstrate the benefits of setting hazardous waste reduction targets and developing waste reduction plans in partnership with those industry sectors most in need

The project will work with 120 small businesses across six sectors in the UK and Ireland to monitor and evaluate reduction in hazardous waste arisings and cost savings achieved.

The project launches as the new Hazardous Waste Regulations (England and Wales) come into force on the 16th July, classifying additional wastes as hazardous and introducing new controls for the movement of hazardous wastes.

As a result many businesses will have to deal with hazardous waste for the first time and meet the associated waste management costs.

HAZRED will work with small businesses as they make up the majority of businesses and are less likely to have staff and resources dedicated to environmental issues.

The project will seek to identify best practice mechanisms that can be transferred to other sectors and inform the approach of other EU member states.

Barbara Young, CE of the Environment Agency, commented: "Our research shows that many small businesses have a low awareness of the issues surrounding hazardous waste".

"HAZRED is an exciting partnership project that aims to work closely with businesses to demonstrate how a sector led approach could help to reduce hazardous waste arisings - still on the increase in Europe".

"By introducing a systematic waste minimisation programme, businesses can not only ensure they comply with environmental regulations but cut costs as well".
