Construction and site waste management plans
Series of free regional Site Waste Management Plan workshops is being organised by Envirowise to help construction companies implement SWMPs.
Countdown to SWMP prompts early action on waste
Construction firms are being urged to take early action on waste before the planned enforcement of Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) next year.
The project will work with 120 small businesses across six sectors in the UK and Ireland to monitor and evaluate reduction in hazardous waste arisings and cost savings achieved.
The project launches as the new Hazardous Waste Regulations (England and Wales) come into force on the 16th July, classifying additional wastes as hazardous and introducing new controls for the movement of hazardous wastes.
As a result many businesses will have to deal with hazardous waste for the first time and meet the associated waste management costs.
HAZRED will work with small businesses as they make up the majority of businesses and are less likely to have staff and resources dedicated to environmental issues.
The project will seek to identify best practice mechanisms that can be transferred to other sectors and inform the approach of other EU member states.
Barbara Young, CE of the Environment Agency, commented: "Our research shows that many small businesses have a low awareness of the issues surrounding hazardous waste".
"HAZRED is an exciting partnership project that aims to work closely with businesses to demonstrate how a sector led approach could help to reduce hazardous waste arisings - still on the increase in Europe".
"By introducing a systematic waste minimisation programme, businesses can not only ensure they comply with environmental regulations but cut costs as well".
