E.ON helps bring school eco-garden back to life

An E.ON UK product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jan 14, 2009

Group of volunteers from E.ON's Ironbridge power station helped transform an eco-garden at Coalbrookdale school in Shropshire.

The eco-wildlife area, which sits in the grounds of the school, had become run down so the team took up the challenge of leading the school's planned makeover and refreshing the area.

The makeover, funded by the local parish council and the Ironbridge team, included creating a new pond and solar water pump, as well as a play train for younger children.

Mary Thornton, Community Liaison Officer at Ironbridge Power Station, said: "We're thrilled to have been able to help the school by refreshing their eco-garden and bringing it back to life".

""The weather may have been cold and damp but the Ironbridge team was undaunted.

They worked really hard to get the new pond in place and the whole area refreshed, and the garden has been transformed"".

"Sue Blackburn, Head teacher of Coalbrookdale School, said: "The eco-garden has always been a haven for wildlife and remained popular with the children but, over time, vandalism took its toll.

We've now had protective fencing put up to stop intruders and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to get the area freshened up for the children".

"We're absolutely thrilled with the result and very grateful to everyone who's been involved - from the funding support from the local parish council and Ironbridge power station, to the E.ON team and contractors for getting stuck in on the day".

"It's a fantastic outcome for us and a great start to 2009 for the children".

E.ON finds and supports volunteering opportunities which provide a rewarding challenge for employees as part of its wider community relations programme.

In 2008, staff spent 13,086 hours volunteering on projects in their local communities.
