Ex-Or's scene-setting and dimming system SceneSelect II is one key element at the heart of the project.
Pre-set lit environments are available to the lecturer via a simple LCD touch screen graphic panel on his lectern.
He selects the pre-set lit scene most appropriate for the theatre where he is giving the lecture, and that automatically creates the most appropriate lit scene in the remote lecture theatre.
Students at both locations have the optimum lighting for them to make notes, see the lecturer and see the screens showing his presentational material.
Ex-Or SceneSelect II delivers a variety of lit environments which not only accommodate lecture sessions, but also scenes which illuminate exit routes once lectures have finished, brightly lit scenes for when the theatres are being cleaned, and alternative lighting patterns when the theatres are used for purposes other than lectures.
Giles Davidson, head of administration at Hull York Medical School who specified the system, said the video-conference system has helped to minimise the logistical problems of a split site medical school.
Without the system, the alternatives would have included excessive travel by groups of students and lecturers and duplicated delivery of lectures.
"Since this is a joint medical school, with students on both campuses, we needed a reliable, flexible 'self-drive' system to deliver lectures in two places at once," said Mr Davidson.
Other benefits of Ex-Or SceneSelect II include added flexibility - whenever the usage of the lecture theatres change, the system can be reprogrammed very easily to suit the new requirements.
In addition, medical school management are enjoying the benefits of dramatically increased lamp life as SceneSelect II automatically protects the lamps from high inrush currents and power surges.
It also cuts down energy costs by ensuring the lights do not remain on, or burn at excessively high levels, when they are not required.
