Marley Eternit helps transform school
play

Grace Architects turned to Marley Eternit for cladding materials for new sports and arts facility for education and community use.

Grace Architects and building surveyors are regular specifiers of Marley Eternit roofing products but it was to the manufacturer's cladding materials that they also turned for a new sports and arts facility for education and community use The 700m2 steel-framed building represented another first as well since it was the first time Eternit's fibre cement Natura cladding had been specified in through-colour Terracotta for a UK project

Formerly the KC White Consultancy , Grace developed the brief in conjunction with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, the headteachers of the two schools the building sits between, and Sport England to comply with the latter's Space for Sports and Arts programme.

Situated on a former playground between the William Ford Junior and Village Infants schools in Dagenham, Essex, need for the building was determined by a survey of the local population that was carried out by the two schools.

The build by main contractor Hutton Construction took nine months with 300m2 of Eternit's 8mm Terracotta Natura screw fixed by ECL Contracts on the upper elevations of the building to complement coloured concrete blockwork on the ground floor and the roof elements that included Marley Eternit's blue/black Thrutone fibre cement slates.

Low maintenance and with an impact resistant surface finish that makes it ideal for school buildings, Natura is available with a 10-year guarantee.

The Thrutone slates are colour-guaranteed for 12 years and durability guaranteed for 30.

Steve Benning of Grace said: "Because the new building sits between schools of different ownership it required careful negotiation but it has been well received by the client".

"They are looking forward to expanding the school curriculum with after-school activities and clubs and working with the local community".

He added: "We have used Marley Eternit slates many times before but never cladding".

"An Eternit mailshot arrived on my desk and I followed it up with the rep who presented samples and terracotta was of particular interest".

"It keeps the rain out and looks good".

"I wanted a colour that was lively and fun but would not look tacky in a few years time and we have hopefully achieved this". Request a free brochure from Marley Eternit ...
